Amazon audible review

If reading more books has always been one of your unkept new year resolutions, Audible will literally change your life.

Let me first say that I love Audible (and all Amazon products/services for that matter). I love being able to listen to books while cooking, working out or on my way somewhere and so Audible comes in  very handy in my already busy schedule.

But in this Audible review, I am going to give you my unbiased opinion and share with you the pros and cons of subscribing to Audible so that you can decide for yourself.

What is Audible?

Audible is an audiobook membership-based service by Amazon that give you access to the largest audiobook library in the world along with other cool features at a reasonable price.

Side Note: I think that Amazon products and services are always fairly priced because I truly believe that the company is not there to just make money but is on a missing to transform people’s lives to the better.

For as little as $14.95 (that is the basic plan), you can listen to audiobooks while you free your hands to do other things and make the most of your time. No more excuses for not reading more books.

How does it work?

You need to sign up through your Amazon account to become a member of Audible. You can choose between one of two plans: Gold or Platinium plan, each of which can be either monthly or annual.

Depending on which plan you choose, you receive a number of free credits that you can exchange for audiobooks each month and you have the option to buy more audiobooks at a 30% discount if the free credits don’t cover your monthly consumption.

The good thing about having a credit based “thing” is that one credit is good for any audiobook, regardless of the price of the book, so you are better off using your credit for more expensive books.

With a gold membership, you receive one free credit per month if you sign up for the monthly plan or all the 12 credits at once if you subscribe to the yearly plan. The Platinium plan gives essentially double the gold plan credits, which are 2 free credits per month for the monthly subscription or all the 24 credits for the annual subscription.

For both plans, you can buy additional audiobooks at 30% discount but you can get around that if you subscribe to the annual plans and receive all your credits at once. You will only look into buying more audiobooks after you used all the 12 or 24 credits. There is really no benefit to the monthly plan as you can try audible for free for 30 days to see if it works for you. 30 days is enough time to decide if you want t commit to a one year subscription in my opinion.

Audible also has an easy exchange/return policy. Audible will allow you to return/exchange a book that you did not like for any other audiobook. That way, you also do not have to buy additional audiobooks if you used all your credits to get audiobooks and you did not like some of them and you can feel free to take a chance and try new books knowing that you can easily swap it for another book or get your credit back if unsatisfied. Of course, it has to be done in good faith and you should not overuse it.

Once you download an audiobook, assuming you don’t return it, it is yours for ever, even if you cancel your plan for whatever reason, you keep all the audiobooks that you have already downloaded.

In addition to free credits already included in the plan every month, members can download two audible originals per month for free that they can pick from six available options on the first Friday of every month.  This is content exclusive to Audible, as it is created, directed and recorded by Audible, and is intended to be enjoyed primarily in an audio form.

Audible features

Audible comes with some really cool features that really makes it stand out  from other audiobook services.

1. Ad-free listening

Audible gives the possibility to listen to audiobook offline and ad-free at no extra charge. All you need to do is to download it and start enjoying your ad-free audiobook.

2. Customized listening speed

Audible let you choose the listening speed that you are most comfortable with. Some people like quick narration while other prefer very slow pace. The choice is ranging from 0.5x to 3.0x and is adjustable anytime.

3. Sleeper time

This is probably one of the most important features for those who enjoy listening to audiobooks before bed. The sleep timer allows you to set a time or the end of a chapter to pause the narration. This feature is very similar to the TV sleep timer for those (like me for whom a good movie acts like a sleeping pill).

4. Car Mode

If you enjoy listening to audioobooks while driving, you will love this feature. You can access and control your Audible from the Car dashboard by simply connecting your phone to your car with an in-dash system and enabling the car mode.

5. Easy Exchange/Refund policy

Audible will allow you to return/exchange an audiobook that you did not like for any other one. Of course it has to be genuine and you should not overdo it. This is great because it gives Audible members the freedom to take a chance and try other genres for example, not worrying that they could use their precious credits on books they might not like.

6. Credit Rollover

Another great feature of Audible that gives a lot of peace of mind is the credit rollover. Depending on your membership, Audible will allow you to rollover your unused credit on a yearly basis within certain limits:

  • Gold Monthly – 5 credits
  • Gold Annual – 6 credits
  • Platinum Monthly – 10 credits
  • Platinum Annual – 12 credits
